Slow‑Poison on U.S. and Australian Plates

While regulators in the EU protect its citizens by outlawing dangerous synthetic chemical additives, Americans and Australians continue to be exposed.

Every day in the U.S. and Australia, consumers bite into foods that would be illegal in much of the Western world. Big food companies and lax regulators let carcinogenic and behaviour‑altering chemicals slide into sodas/soft-drinks, cereals, meat, and snacks, while the EU bans them outright. This is not by accident: it reflects a permissive regulatory culture that literally treats consumers as guinea pigs.

American and Australian shoppers are being slowly poisoned, and worse, few know it.

Below are 10 food‐additives or processing practices banned in the EU, but still allowed in the U.S. and Australia.

1. Citrus Sodas/Soft-Drinks with Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)

BVO was used for decades in sodas (e.g., Mountain Dew) to keep citrus flavour evenly dispersed. It contains bromine, a chemical element found in flame retardants. The FDA proposed revoking its approval after studies found that BVO accumulates in the body, particularly in the thyroid gland, and can impair thyroid hormone regulation, leading to memory loss, fatigue, and coordination problems. And yet, it still exists. The EU banned BVO over a decade ago. In Australia, while BVO hasn’t been widely used in major soft-drink brands for years, there is no federal ban, and food‑additive regulations remain less strict than the EU’s precautionary controls.

2. Skittles and Other Sweets with Titanium Dioxide (E171)

Titanium dioxide is a whitening pigment used in sweets like Skittles, and in baked goods. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that it was genotoxic — able to damage DNA — and they banned it in 2022. In the U.S., the FDA still allows TiO₂ up to 1% of food weight. Australia’s food standards also permit it.

Studies suggest that long-term ingestion of titanium dioxide nanoparticles accumulate in the liver, spleen, and kidneys, triggering inflammation, oxidative stress, and immune system disruption. (EFSA Journal, 2021) Several other reports claim links to gastrointestinal disorders and gut microbiome imbalance.
