They Tested the Sky. It Didn't Open. Everything After Was Damage Control

A century of assumptions collapses when evidence points to a closed, reactive system above us, one that resists intrusion and refuses the story of endless space. It began in 1962.

This essay draws on declassified US military documents, publicly released footage, historical reporting, and independent analysis available in the public domain. It reflects my interpretation of that material.

They’ve been telling us for decades space is infinite, that humans could one day breach the heavens. A classified U.S. government program in the early 1960s suggests otherwise. Nuclear missiles fired straight up met resistance, plasma erupted, and every test raised the question they still refuse to answer to this day: what exactly lies above us and why won’t it let us through?

In 1962, seven years before the Apollo program reached its most mythologised moment, the United States launched Operation Fishbowl. Thirty-one high-altitude missile tests fired straight up from Johnston Island into the sky. These tests formed part of Operation Dominic I, the largest (nuclear) test series in history. Dominic provided the budget, the urgency, and the Cold War justification. Fishbowl provided something else entirely: Evidence that upward motion hit resistance, and evidence that the sky behaved less like empty space and more like a structured medium.

The official story frames Fishbowl as a study of nuclear detonations in near-space. The US Department of Defense described the tests as efforts to understand radiation effects on communications, satellites, and missile defence systems. NASA later echoed this framing, insisting that the tests occurred in the vacuum of space and contributed to knowledge of the Van Allen radiation belts.

Those explanations hold in mainstream science, but they collapse under the scrutiny of the footage and the test results.

Fishbowl didn’t begin smoothly. Early launches failed repeatedly, and missiles self-destructed or broke apart at altitude. Bluegill Prime failed. Bluegill Double Prime failed. Starfish Prime succeeded only after a series of aborted attempts. Failure at that scale signals more than engineering error. It signals interaction with an environment that didn’t behave as predicted.

Watch the footage. Nuclear devices detonate at altitude and spread outward, not into nothingness, but into something that resists, contains, and refracts. Plasma blooms flatten. Shockwaves curve. Light disperses in layered bands. These aren’t the signatures of a vacuum. They resemble fluid dynamics and electromagnetic impedance.

For what it’s worth, the Bible describes this structure plainly. Genesis 1.6 in the King James version states, “And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Genesis 1.7 continues, “And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament.” This language doesn’t describe metaphor. It describes separation, structure, and containment. The waters above and the waters below suggest layers with physical properties.

Fishbowl footage aligns with that description. Missiles rise along a parabolic path rather than a straight, unimpeded ascent. They reach a boundary, interact with it, and begin to lose structural and energetic coherence. The objects disperse, flatten, or bloom outward as though meeting resistance, after which debris and energy drop back toward Earth or into the surrounding ocean. They don’t travel indefinitely upward, instead they interact with a field that redirects motion and restores equilibrium.

Starfish Prime offers the clearest example.
